Minimize Your Time Spent in Crowded Places

The more people you are around at a single time, the more likely you are to catch an illness. That’s why you should try to avoid crowded public places as much as possible while you’re training. Staying out of places like malls and busy restaurants can reduce your chances of getting sick.

Eat Immune Boosting Foods

Certain foods can help you maintain a strong immune system and reduce your risk of catching the flu and other illnesses. Vitamin C rich foods, like oranges and grapefruit, for example, are great for the immune system and should be consumed regularly throughout the week. Other foods that can improve your immunity include broccoli, ginger, yogurt, spinach and almonds.

Get Proper Rest

Getting adequate rest every night can also reduce your risk of getting sick during your training. When you get eight hours of sleep every night, your body has a chance to repair itself and become strong enough to fight illnesses. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same times every day and avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages in the evening. If you have trouble falling asleep, try doing something relaxing before bedtime, like yoga or meditation.

Be Careful Not to Overtrain

While it’s good to take your triathlon training seriously and work hard, you shouldn’t overdo it. If you train too hard, you could stress out your body and lower your immunity, putting you at risk of catching illnesses. Make sure to take at least one or two rest days every week and take a break whenever you feel pain.

It’s normal to get stressed from time to time, especially when you’re training for something like the triathlon. However, if you allow stress to get out of control, it could lower your immune system and make you more susceptible to illnesses. Try to start out every morning with a stress reducing activity, like deep breathing or yoga, and don’t be afraid to ask others to help with tasks if you feel overwhelmed.
