Different types of Medical Treatment

Find a Doctor

Over the past several years, more and more people have made an effort to find different options other than just traditional medicine. This has happened as many people realize that there is an abundance of cures in nature that provide relief. They would rather turn to nature than synthetics.

With so many newer options, it can get confusing to know different types of medical treatment is best for you. The following is a brief overview of the different types of medical care available.

Conventional Medicine: This is the way the majority of the United States get their medical care. The focus tends to be more on treating the symptoms of a patient and not so much treating the overall cause of the symptoms. The majority of treatments involve synthetic medicines, surgery, and invasive procedures.

Conventional medicine physicians do not view the body as a whole, but instead views it as a serious of organs. In fact, each organ of the body has their own medical specialist, such as cardiologist for the heart, dermatologist for the skin, neurologist for the brain, etc. Medical treatments are focused primarily on the organ where the issue is coming from.

Holistic Medicine: In holistic medicine, it is believed that the body, emotions, mind, and spirit are all interconnected, so any medical treatment involves all three of these factors. Holistic practitioners believe that the we are made up of interdependent parts and when one area is not functioning correctly, this impacts all the other parts.

Unlike conventional medicine, which treats only the symptoms of the patient, holistic medicine looks to find the root of the symptoms and treat the whole body. Holistic practitioners use different types of treatments including acupressure, acupuncture, chiropractic techniques, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and osteopathy.

Naturopathic Medicine:  Just like holistic medicine, naturopathic medicine believes the body, emotions, mind, and spirit are all connected. Instead of just treating the symptoms, naturopathic treatment also looks for the root of the medical issue and not just treat symptoms. Naturopathic medicine is known as the healing power of nature. It uses natural medicines to help the body heal itself. Treatments include acupuncture, exercise, herbs, massage, and nutritional counseling. Depending on what type of condition a patient has, their naturopathic doctor may prescribe supplements, detox diet, and spinal adjustments to help with the patient’s condition.

Some of the common conditions include:

  • Allergies
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Chronic pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Fertility issues
  • Headaches
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Obesity

Integrative Medicine: Integrative medicine takes conventional and blends it with alternative medical treatments. Integrative medicine addresses both the immediate issues the patient is having and restoring the overall health, focusing on the patient’s individual circumstances concerning their emotional, environmental, mental, physical, social, and spiritual.

Integrative medicine uses treatments from conventional medicine, blending with acupuncture, chiropractic treatments, herbs, and other alternative medicine treatments.
