What to Look For When Choosing a Dentist

Find a Doctor

Whether you’re recently moved or haven’t been to the dentist in a while, it isn’t always easy to find the right dentist. Here are some tips to help you select a dentist that you trust with your beautiful smile.

Get Recommendations

Ask your friends and family if they have a dentist. Chances are, you’ll get some great recommendations locally. Your doctor or pharmacist may be able to suggest a good dentist. Co-workers are another source of information. The American Dental Association website can provide a list of local dentists who are members. ADA dentists are committed to putting your health first.

Get Information

Once you have a list of dentists, you’ll want to narrow down the list. Find out whether the dentist accepts your insurance. Next, look at location. The more convenient your dentist’s office is, the more likely you’ll make (and keep) appointments. Check the office hours, too. Browse through the dentist’s website to find out how emergencies are handled and their approach to preventative dentistry. Look for their missed appointment policy. While you’re on the website, check to see whether you can schedule appointments online for convenience.

Take Your Time Choosing a Dentist

It’s okay to ask to visit the office and meet the staff. Check out the office. Does it look neat and orderly? Are the staff friendly and professional? If you can tour the office, look for up-to-date equipment and technology. Think about where the office is located, too. Was it convenient to get to from work? If you made an appointment, were you kept waiting a long time?

How does the office handle fees and payment? Are you given information about treatment plans and costs before the work is done? Does the dentist explain what treatment is required? Are you given options for treatment?

During your cleaning, how comfortable are you? Does the office have technology that distracts you, music, a television on the ceiling or another option? Are you given information that helps you take care of your oral health between visits? Is the dental team encouraging instead of patronizing?

Trust your judgment when choosing your dentist. You may have to visit one or two dentists to find the right team to help you with your dental care. It’s okay to take some time to make this important decision.

Choose Your Dentist Wisely

You want to find a dentist who you trust with your health. Dental care is very intimate and personal. Look for a dentist with whom you can build a long-term relationship.
