With the summers growing hotter, it’s imperative that the older generation prepare themselves for the increasing heat. It’s common knowledge that the older generation is more susceptible to drastic temperatures. In fact, according to the CDC, people who are over the age of 65 are more likely to have health issues caused by extreme heat.

This preparedness is especially important in tropical climates, such as Florida. In most of the state, the average summer temperature can rise into the 90s. Paired with a hot sun, this climate can prove dangerous to the senior citizen.

Thus, in order to metaphorically ‘beat the heat,’ here are four steps for staying healthy during the summer.

  1. Stay Aware of the Temperature

One way to prepare for the heat is to stay informed on how hot the day will become. Check the forecast the night before, and check it again in the morning. If the temperatures are too extreme, limit your time outside and stay in an air-conditioned environment.

Through being aware of the weather, you can plan your outside activities accordingly. A round of golf is probably better suited to moderate temperatures, instead of extreme heat!

  1. Dress Yourself for Heat Protection

If you do plan on going outside, make sure to dress accordingly. The CDC recommends wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.  Also, apply a healthy layer of sunscreen, and make sure to bring a hat. 

  1. Hydration is Everything

For a senior citizen, staying hydrated is critical in beating the summer heat. It should be noted that the elderly generation is already prone to dehydration; this is mostly due to decreased kidney function, diuretic medications, and other contingencies.

Thus, when the heat arrives, you can fight it through replenishing fluids. Drink substances that are not sugary or filled with additives, as these will act as a diuretic.   1. There’s Safety in Numbers

If you are trying to stay safe during the summer, it’s easier if you enlist some outside aid. This can be a family member, a friend, or even a home caregiver. These helpers will be with you, or simply checking in on your welfare. This mostly acts as a safety measure should anything happen. At the end of the day, when it comes to oppressive heat, there is definitely safety in numbers!
